Star Wars: Battlefront kommt Ende 2015 und wird geil aussehen. Wie das Gameplay und das Spiel an sich ankommen wird, muss man abwarten, aber heute steht die Grafik zur Debatte.
Wir haben schon so einige Teaser, Trailer und ein bisschen Gameplay in der jüngeren Vergangenheit bewundern können und kamen zu dem Schluss, dass Star Wars: Battlefront rein optisch ein Augenschmaus ist. Die Entwickler haben die Techniken und den damit verbundenen Aufwand etwas näher erläutert.
Allem voran steht das Schlagwort „Photogrammetry“. Dabei handelt es sich ursprünglich um ein Messverfahren, welches aus der Geodäsie hervorging und im Grunde in Bezug auf das Spiel gesehen neben der Aufnahme von hochauflösenden Photos auch Messungen aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln beinhaltet, um im Endeffekt hochdetaillierte, farbechte und damit exzellent aussehende 3D-Meshes zu erstellen. Zu diesem Zweck sind mehrere Teams weltweit unterwegs gewesen und haben in Wäldern, Wüsten, im Schnee und Eis terrabyteweise Daten und Photos gesammelt, um diese in späteren Verfahren miteinander zu vernetzen und damit fast lebensechte Grafiken zu erstellen. Wir haben natürlich auch für euch ein Ergebnis dieser aufwendigen Art und Weise der grafischen Gestaltung parat, das eindrucksvoll beweist, wie geil ein Spiel aussehen kann.
Dieser Aufwand wurde tatsächlich nicht nur mit den Landschaften, Wäldern, Bäumen, Steinen etc. betrieben, auch Kleinigkeiten wie Ausrüstung, Waffen, Helme, Raumschiffe, der Todestern und diverse andere Gegenstände wurden mit der gleichen Sorgfalt und dem gleichen Aufwand ausgemessen, photografiert und entsprechend aufbereitet. Zu diesem Zweck hat sich der Character Artist Björn Arvidsson ins wohltemperierte Lucasarts Cultural Arts Museum begeben und dort alles in Augenschein genommen, was nur irgendwie wichtig für die Produktion des Spiel erschien und hat sich nebenbei wie ein Kind in einem Bonbonladen gefühlt.
Während Björn sich im Museum königlich amüsierte, trieben sich seine Teamkameraden in der Weltgeschichte herum. So bekamen die Entwickler unfassbar gut aussehendes Material aus den Redwood-Wäldern mit seinen teils 100m hohen Redwoodbäumen oder schicke Aufnahmen aus dem Death Valley in Kalifornien, sie trieben sich im Eis und Schnee in Skandinavien herum und holten sich einen kalten Hintern in Norwegen und Finnland, um Material für den Planeten Hoth zu sammeln, wärend die Wüstenei natürlich für Tatooine gebraucht wird.
Man sieht, welchen Aufwand EA und DICE betreiben, um ein für uns nachvollziehbares und gefühlstechnisch authentisches Game zu entwickeln. Viele beschweren sich zur Zeit über zu wenig Inhalte, fehlende Raumschlachten, kein steuerbarer AT-AT und das weniger Spieler auf Multiplayerservern ihr Unwesen treiben können, aber das Spiel ist noch mitten in der Entwicklung und wir sollten abwarten, was am 17. November diesen Jahres auf uns zu kommen wird. Man darf gespannt sein, aber geil aussehen wird es allemal…
Um es auf den Punkt zu bringen, hat Björn Arvidsson folgende Aussage getätigt: „At DICE, it’s everyone’s quest to make Star Wars Battlefront feel as ‘Star Wars’ as possible. All those emotions, connected to this universe we all love, are something we hope will get through to the gamer on November 17th.“. Dann hoffen wir mal, dass uns unsere Gefühle im November überwältigen werden.
