Nintendo hat die Entscheidung getroffen, einige Online-Dienste für ein paar Produkte einzustellen. Insbesondere auf den Multiplayer Bereich werden künftig Wii und DS bzw DSi Kunden verzichten müssen.
Auf der offiziellen Seite von Nintendo wurde angekündigt, dass die Wi-Fi Connection Dienste für die Nintendo Wii sowie für den Nintendo DS bzw DSi am 20. Mai 2014 eingestellt werden. Demnach wird es ab diesem Zeitpunkt nicht mehr möglich sein, bestimmte Online-Funktionen auf den betroffenen Geräten aufzurufen.
Die Einschränkungen betreffen Funktionen wie zum Beispiel den Online-Play Dienst, das Matchmaking System, Leaderboards und auch die Wii Speak Applikation. Internet Channels und Browser, YouTube Channels sowie die systemspezifischen Shops werden auf den Wii und DS Konsolen nach der Abschaltung weiterhin einsatzbereit bleiben. Nintendo hat für betroffene Kunden eine Liste mit Spielen zusammengestellt, die ab dem 20. Mai 2014 nicht mehr auf die Online-Dienste zugreifen können werden. Die Liste beinhaltet nur jene Spiele, die Nintendo selbst veröffentlicht hat. Bei Third-Party Spielen soll man sich direkt an die zuständigen Publisher wenden.

Selbstverständlich sind die aktuelleren Nintendo Produkte wie die WiiU oder der 3DS nicht direkt betroffen. Allerdings wird man auch auf diesen Geräten nicht auf Online-Dienste zurückgreifen können, sofern man alte Wii und DS Spiele mittels Abwärtskompatibilitätsfunktionen nutzen möchte.
