Die kanadischen Spieleentwickler von Night Dive, welche für Neuauflagen von Spieleklassikern bekannt sind, haben alle Rechte für System Shock erworben.
Vielleicht erinnert ihr euch noch an System Shock. Es war ein First-Person Shooter Action Surival Horror Rollenspiel im Weltraum und wurde 1994 veröffentlicht. Für die damaligen Verhältnisse waren die Physik und das immersive Spielerlebnis ausgesprochen gut und führend auf dem Gebiet der Spiele. Und diese Spielreihe soll nun auf neuere Geräte portiert und angepasst werden. An dem Beispiel von Deus Ex aus dem Jahre 2000, welches noch immer Mods erhält (wir berichteten) und geistiger Nachfolger von System Shock ist, wird sichtbar, dass solche Spieleklassiker noch immer Spielwert und vor allem Marktwert haben.
Das Entwicklerstudio Night Dive aus Montreal, das 2013 gegründet wurde, hat den eigenen Schwerpunkt auf den Erhalt solcher Spieleklassiker gelegt. Das heißt, sie kaufen vermehrt die Rechte zu den Spielen auf, um sie auf aktuelle Systeme anzupassen. Die erste veröffentlichte Neuauflage war das Spiel System Shock 2, welche zum Beispiel auf GOG erhältlich ist.
Auch kann man auf eine mögliche Weiterführung der Spielereihe mit einem System Shock 3 hoffen, obwohl Night Dive verkündete, dass es die Kapazitäten von ihnen übersteigt und sie Hilfe von außen benötigen. Trotzdem sind die Rechte für eine mögliche Fortsetzung erst einmal vom Markt, da sie von Night Dive aufgekauft wurden. Wie es dazu kam, beschreibt Jared Newman:
Wegen einem allgemeinem Durcheinander, wer nun eigentlich die Rechte für die Reihe habe, war der einzige Weg an ein Spiel zu kommen, eine alte originale Disc zu kaufen oder eine Spielversion illegal zu downlaoden und damit waren erstmal alle möglichen Fortsetzungen ausgeschlossen. Nach einigem Suchen fanden wir heraus, dass die Rechte bei einer in Michigan ansässigen Versicherung lagen. Ein Anwalt der Firma sagte mir dann, ihr Client wäre bereit, die Lizenzen zu verkaufen. […]
Dennoch ist es bis jetzt nur eine vage Vermutung, ob es einen dritten Teil der System Shock Reihe geben wird. Auf jeden Fall aber können wir auf eine Neuauflage vieler guter alter Spieleklassiker hoffen.
